The Maharashtra State Commission for Women is a statutory body, which was constituted under Maharashtra Act No. XV of 1993. The main objectives of the Commission are:

- To advise the Government on all matters related to the improvement and upliftment of the status and dignity of women in society.
Elimination of violence against women is the main focus area identified by the Commission. As soon as any incident related to the exploitation/ molestation/ atrocities against women comes to the notice of the Commission, immediate steps are taken to intervene with the respective Government / police authorities in order to ensure that proper investigations are conducted and the offenders prosecuted. A number of cases pertaining to matrimonial matters, property matters, dowry harassment, dowry deaths, rape, etc. are being recorded at the Commission's office. In order to handle cases pertaining to atrocities against women, the Commission endeavours to offer counselling services to needy women prior to the commencement of any litigation. The commission began a Counselling and free Legal Advice Centre in its premises at Mumbai on 18th March, 1995. The Commission has asked all Zilla Parishads, Municipal Corporations and local bodies to open Counselling Cells through NGOs with funds from their Women and Child Development Department's Budget. The NGOs will be approved by the Commission.
The Commission holds Legal Literacy Workshops for Women through NGOs as well as directly. The Commission is vigilant about specific issues such as implementation of Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation & Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1994 and Gender insensitivity on the Portrayal of women in the Media. The Commission conducts various research studies on issues pertaining to women.
The Commission conducts workshops highlighting women's issues and networks with NGOs on these issues. The Commission brings out a quarterly news letter 'Thingi- a Spark', in Marathi & English, to enable greater rapport between the Commission & Non-Governmental Organisation.
